What Is AI?

What does Artificial Intelligence mean?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an umbrella term for computer programs that perform tasks which would normally require human thinking: writing texts, recognising images, understanding language or making decisions.

Important to understand: AI does not “think” like a human. It recognises patterns in vast amounts of data and uses these patterns to make predictions. When ChatGPT writes a sentence, it calculates word by word which word is statistically the most likely to come next.

There are two types of AI:

  • Weak AI (what we have today): Specialised in one task — generating texts, recognising images, analysing data.
  • Strong AI (does not exist): A machine that thinks like a human and can do everything. That is science fiction, not reality.

Everything you use in your daily work — ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini — is weak AI. Extremely powerful in its domain, but without any understanding of what it does.

💡 Practice tip

When someone tells you “The AI understands that”, correct it internally: the AI calculates a statistical prediction. This awareness protects you from blind trust.
