Why Is GEO Becoming Important Right Now?

GEO is becoming relevant because AI answers are turning into the default search interface, and users click on classic links less often as a result. According to Sundar Pichai's keynote at Google I/O on May 20, 2025, Google AI Overviews had over 1.5 billion users per month in more than 200 countries and territories.

In a later official disclosure (Alphabet Q2 earnings, July 2025), Pichai cited over 2 billion monthly users for AI Overviews (reported via TechCrunch; as of July 2025). Google called AI Overviews one of the most successful search launches of the decade; in the largest markets (US, India), they drive over 10% more usage for exactly the query types where AI Overviews appear, according to Google.

This measurably changes click behavior. A Pew Research study (data collected March 2025, 900 US adults, 68,879 searches) found that when an AI summary was present, users clicked a classic link in only 8% of visits, compared to 15% without an AI summary. Only 1% of visits to pages with an AI summary led to a click on a cited source. Sessions also ended more often after a single page when an AI summary was present (26% vs. 16%).

How Do Generative Search Engines Select Their Sources?

Generative search engines work on the RAG principle (Retrieval-Augmented Generation): they retrieve web content in real time, rank it, and synthesize it into an answer with inline source citations. How Do I Structure Content for AI Citations in Practice?

Structure your content so that each paragraph answers a question on its own and carries its own evidence, because LLMs prefer to cite sentences that contain a fact, a number, a date, and a source. Proven building blocks:

  • Direct-answer block right under the heading: 40 to 60 words that answer the core question in a self-contained way.
  • H2/H3 headings as real user questions ("What is...?", "How do I measure...?") with a first sentence that answers the question on its own.
  • Atomic facts: one statement per sentence, with entity, number, date, and source inline.
  • Tables and FAQ sections: structured formats are picked up disproportionately often in AI answers.
  • E-E-A-T: a named author and a visible last-updated date for the article.

Technically, AI crawlers must be allowed to access your site. Do not block GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, or Google-Extended in robots.txt, and optionally provide an /llms.txt file. How Do I Measure GEO Visibility?

You do not measure GEO visibility through classic rankings but through whether and how often your URL is cited in LLM answers. A common approach is a before and after comparison of citation frequency and share of voice in AI answers, for example with tools such as Ahrefs Brand Radar (cited-pages, AI-responses).

Note (market observation): specific tool features are vendor features, not an independent standard; no official or normative metric for GEO visibility exists (as of June 2026). GEO is worth it especially when your target audience uses informational and question keywords ("What is...?", "How does... work?"), because that is exactly where generative search engines deliver the answer directly.
