Why count pixels instead of characters

A title tag may be at most about 580 pixels wide (desktop) or about 920 pixels (mobile), otherwise Google cuts it off. That is roughly 55 to 60 characters, but what counts is the pixel width, not the number of characters.

Google renders search results in a proportional font: a "W" is around four times as wide as an "i". Two titles with the same number of characters can therefore take up different amounts of space: one fits comfortably, the other is cut off in the middle of a word. That is why the SERP snippet generator measures the actual pixel width, in 20-pixel Arial for the title tag and 14 or 16 pixels for the meta description, instead of just counting characters. Something similar applies to the meta description length in pixels: around 990 pixels are available on desktop, and around 1,250 pixels on mobile with a larger font.

How Google rewrites titles

Google rewrites title tags when they are too long, string keywords together, are identical across a site or do not match the search query; studies found this affected more than half of all pages. The consequence: Google then generates its own title from the H1 heading or from anchor texts on other pages, and you lose control over your most important first impression in the search results.

The remedy is simple: a precise, unique title of the right length, with the most important keyword at the beginning and the brand at the end. Following these rules significantly reduces the likelihood of a rewrite.

Best practices for snippets with a strong CTR

A snippet that wins clicks follows clear rules: put the most important keyword at the start, state a concrete benefit rather than a plain feature list, include a number or a year such as "2026", and use active verbs rather than passive phrasing.

Avoid writing everything in capitals: it comes across as shouting and tends to put people off. Emojis are not a good idea either: Google usually filters them out of titles, as the notice in the tool above shows. Instead, end the meta description with a clear call to action that invites the click.

The meta description as a pitch

The meta description is not a direct ranking factor, but it influences ranking indirectly: a convincing description increases the click-through rate, and more clicks at the same position mean more visitors. So treat it like a two-line advert for your page, not like a technical summary.

Put the most important message into the first 100 characters, because mobile users often see the description visually shortened earlier. Include your focus keyword, because Google puts matching search terms in bold in the search results, and that bold text also catches the eye. Manually testing how a snippet looks in both views is tedious work; anyone who wants to optimise SEO and GEO systematically rather than piecemeal automates exactly this process.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a title tag be?

In Google’s desktop search a title tag may be at most about 580 pixels wide, in mobile search about 920 pixels spread over up to two lines. Depending on letter widths, that corresponds to roughly 55 to 60 characters. Google measures the actual pixel width, not the character count, so a title made of narrow letters such as “i” or “l” may contain more characters than one made of wide letters such as “W” or “M”.

How long can a meta description be?

On desktop, a meta description should be at most around 990 pixels wide, which corresponds to about 150 to 160 characters. On mobile, around 1,250 pixels are available, but in a larger font. Google truncates longer descriptions with “…”, so the key message and the focus keyword belong in the first 100 characters.

Why does Google count pixels instead of characters?

Google renders search results in a proportional font in which every letter has a different width: a “W” is around four times as wide as an “i”. Two titles with the same number of characters can therefore take up different amounts of space. Truncation happens as soon as the available pixel width is exceeded, which is why this tool checks the measured pixel width and not just the character count.

Why does Google rewrite my title?

Google replaces title tags when they are too long, string keywords together, are identical across the site or do not match the search query; in studies this affected more than half of all pages. Writing a precise, unique title of suitable length with the most important keyword at the start significantly lowers the likelihood of a rewrite.

Is the meta description a ranking factor?

No, the meta description is not a direct ranking factor. It does influence rankings indirectly, though: a convincing description raises the click-through rate (CTR) in the search results, and more clicks mean more visitors from the same position. Treat the description as a two-line advertisement for your page.
